CONCENTRATION AREAS AND RESEARCH LINES
The Master Course in Studies of Languages is divided into two concentration areas: ‘Linguistic and Semiotics’ and ‘Literatures, Comparative Studies and Interarts’, as described below
- Linguistics and Semiotics: the study of language in its diverse levels from distinct theoretical underpinnings which allows the description of linguistic facts in mother tongue in different situations of use, including languages in contact, text and discourse, concerning the mechanisms of text organization and external conditions that interfere in discursive meaning making in relation, in the conditions of production of discourse mediated by semiotic analysis, which favors the interface among various discourses and the diverse language
manifestations. - Literatures, Comparative Studies and Interarts: it embraces theoretical-analytical studies of literary texts and of other artistic objects (film, photography, and painting, among others) towards questions that permit the researcher to move from the general theory of literature to a comparative investigation enhancing the (trans)dialogue among literature, Art and cultures.
Linguistics and Semiotics include three research lines:
- Linguistic Description and Analysis: tits object is language study, oral and written, from its complexity as a sociocultural and historical phenomenon under diverse theoretical-methodological and different aspects (phonetic-phonological, syntactic, semantic, lexical and pragmatic), encompassing issues related to language organization as a system, to the variation in distinct dimensions and to its insertion in a given society.
- Semiotic Practices and Objects: their aim is to analyze the procedures of meaning making in texts and discourses in diverse languages, considering their intrinsic relations and those of their conditions of production.
- Languages, Identities and Teaching: common to the two concentration areas, this research line aims at doing studies of languages and their relation to different technological mediations, with issues connected to language teachinglearning, literature and other modes of language together with cultural and identity questions.
Literature, Comparative studies and Interarts also embrace threes research
lines:
- Transdisciplinary Studies: starting from the prefix – trans, as “beyond” in contexts of dialogue and of (re)conciliation, this line allows for development of investigations which (re)visit situations and theoretical, classical and modern conditions in the fields of art, literature and cultures, necessarily entailing shared knowledge and in constant (re)evaluation not only under scientific inflection, but also under intuitions of sensibility and mentalities.
- Representation, Culture, Literature:this line allows for the development of transrelational investigations having as its bases both culture and literature as forms of translating empirical and symbolic realities. This translation occurs by means of representation and its capacity to attribute meanings, which are not reflexive, but rather diverse modes of different subject´s experiences through
individual choices going from writing to literary form. In meeting a regional demand, it includes the place of literature in basic education through literary literacy with emphasis on the diverse approaches to artistic-literary texts. - Languages, Identity, Teaching: common to the two concentration areas, the two concentration areas, this research line aims at doing studies of languages and their relation to different technological mediations, with issues connected to language teaching-learning, literature and other modes of language together with cultural and identity questions.
Objectives
The Master Course in Studies of Languages aims at the development of autonomous researchers, the capacity-building of professionals of Linguistics and Semiotics and of similar areas, without delinking them from teaching in diverse institutions of basic and higher education, public and private ones, not only in Mato Grosso do Sul, but also in other states of the Center-West region and of specific places in the South and Southwest of Brazil From this perspective, it seeks to foster and strengthen research groups, embracing
its research lines. Such objectives can be achieved through the Program, as an academic space whose nature is transdisciplinary, having as its central axis the inclusion of diverse languages (not only the verbal one), a constitutive aspect of its proposal which contributes to attract professionals from the area of Languages and Linguistics, and also from similar ones, specially from Visual Arts, Communication, Architecture, Design and Music in addition to the those from Education and Philosophy mainly for their interest in language issues.
The course is founded on the deepening of theoretical and empirical studies related to the Science of languages, which, in turn, is constituent of culture. It offers subsidies for a critical revision of the contributions of Linguistics, Literature and for similar areas for the processes of verbal and non-verbal readings, textual production, linguistic analysis and literary analysis and their relations with other fields of knowledge. To tackle the features from the multiple objects to be investigated, considering their connections with global
contexts, this program seeks to enhance and strengthen research on diversified perspectives of language studies, valorizing the linguistic and cultural contexts of the Center-West region as a springboard to the expansion of its activities in national and international spaces.
Egress profile
The course aims at an egress whose profile is of a researcher and professional of higher education fully capable of performing in recognized fields of Linguistics and Literature and in related and transdisciplinary areas. This reflects its concentration areas and research lines, and it strives for developing teachers for secondary education and high schools with critical attitude towards didactic and research actions to foster discussions of present
paradigms, leading them to productive rather than reproductive practices.
Another aspect of the egress´ profile alludes to his/her capacity to work in team, going beyond the Program in itself: collaborative interactions with other programs, be they public or private, including Basic Education schools and non-formal education spaces are necessary to promote collective learning, which benefits all the subjects (professors, teachers, students, administrative stuff, families, and the general society) of Education, with emphasis on Linguistics, Literature, Arts and related areas.
The Program is characterized by transdisciplinary interfaces of the literary and linguistic realms with other languages of tradition and studies of culture, whose diversity of discourses-objects has expanded world reading. It has encouraged students to become active and participative researchers. Also, it welcomes students not only from Languages and Linguistics, but also from other fields of knowledge.
This full involvement enables the egress to respect differences and promote dialogues enhancing the possibilities to transform Education within the broader society.
Curricular Structure
The curricular structure of the course integrates a range of disciplines, which offer a broad view of the object and its relation with the subjects, history and representations, building a theoretical-methodological framework of relevant sciences, necessary to support research. The disciplines are organized as following: 02 compulsory disciplines that are common to the concentration areas: Literature, Comparative Studies, and Interarts, and Linguistics and Semiotics:

In addition, other curricular components are compulsory:
- Special Activities II
- Elaboration of Master´s Thesis
- Defense of Master´s Thesis
Special Activities (credits obtained under tutorial, research and community Project, which are developed during the Course). They refer to participation in the organization of scientific events, publication of manuscripts in journals classified in Qualis/CAPES A and B strata, publication of authorial book or book chapter, in accordance with the criteria of the Brazilian system of journal evaluation (Qualis/CAPES), publication of work in the proceedings of international scientific events, publication of work in the proceedings of
scientific national and regional scientific events, presentation of work in international events and presentation of work in national and regional events.
